The ONLY APSI that offers a Jet Boat ride up the mighty Niagara river!

The Advanced Placement Summer Institute (APSI) will offer intensive courses that will provide in-depth preparation for teaching AP subject matter. It will also serve as a forum for exchanging ideas and information about the course and examination. Participants will have the opportunity to design or modify a course outline and curriculum that is organized around selected topics and concepts. Teachers should check with their school district in regards to registering these hours for professional development service.

NOTE: We are examing the possibility of offering these programs for graduate credit with the College of Education.  We will contact all if this opportunity develops and offer these coursez at the regular credit tuition rate.

Niagara University is delighted to offer their annual College Board endorsed Advanced Placement Summer Institute (APSI) for teachers who would like to prepare themselves for AP teaching or advance their skills in AP courses.

High School AP teachers get ready!  Mark the dates in your calendar and sign up today to receive more information.  Always a great program with tons of information, a jet boat cruise, beautiful hotel and so much info that you'll need to bring bags for all your materials. Don't miss this year and bring your family!

New changes in 2010.  Potential AP subjects include: Biology, Calculus AB, Computer Science, Economics, English Literature, Environmental Science, French Language, US Government and Politics, Psychology, and US History. Find out more about upcoming changes at AP in 2011-12 and Beyond.

Who should attend? New, relatively new teachers, and experienced teachers will all benefit.. Emphasis will be placed on preparing, organizing, running, and evaluating the required curriculum and as needed, any laboratory experiences. Past AP exams will be included, as well as a discussion of the scoring rubrics and the grading of the free response section of the exam.

Instructor: Dr. Mark Gallo
Mark Gallo received his BS in Biochemistry from the University of Pittsburgh, his MS in Biochemistry from Pitt Medical School and his PhD in Microbiology at Cornell.  He also performed post-doctoral work at the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he was also involved in the Biology Honors Program (BioCore) and initiating the Frontiers of Science program for high school students at Promega.  He has been at Niagara University for the past 13 years where he is an Associate Professor of Biology.  Dr. Gallo has been involved in re-vamping the introductory biology courses at the institution and has played a pivotal role in the implementation of bioinformatics courses in the curriculum.  Mark has been a presenter at the National Association for Biology Teachers (NABT) and the National Science Teachers Association general meetings for the past several years.  He has taken an active role in the local K12 community with his Lessons In Molecular Biology (LIMB) program for AP Biology students and teachers.  He has been the Chair of the K12 Education Committee for the American Society for Microbiology for the past 6 years.  He has operated numerous workshops for students and teachers and is actively involved in several groups concerned with lessons learned in introductory biology and is aware of the changes in the works for AP Biology.

What About?
Attendance Policy
Certificates will be distributed on Friday and will reflect the number of hours in attendance at the institute. Attendance is taken every day by the consultant.
 
Cancellation and Refund Policy
A $50 processing fee will be deducted from all refunds requested before the registration. No refunds can be made after the registration deadline; however, a registration may be transferred to another individual from the same school or school district. NOTE: Travel arrangements will not be reimbursed by Niagara University due to cancellation.

Niagara University has been able to make arrangements with the Barton Hill Hotel in Lewiston, NY.  Participants are responsible for making their own arrangements and a limited block of rooms are available at the special rate of $129 per night. Dining Information - included in the registration fee
•    Morning coffee, juice and light snacks are provided
•    A daily buffet lunch will be served in Clet Dining Hall.  Dinner is on your own but in Lewiston, there are many local establishments in the area.

Travel and Airports
Niagara University is located approximately 15 minutes north of Niagara Falls, NY and 30 minutes north of Buffalo, NY.  Directions to campus may be found at www.niagara.edu or other internet direction sites. The closest airport is the Buffalo-Niagara International Airport located approximately 50 minutes from Niagara University and Toronto International Airport (Canada) is approximately 2 hours.

Parking and Driving Information and ID Cards

Free parking is available in lots throughout campus. Campus Security will not ticket any cars parked in college student parking lots during the summer provided the car is parked in a legal parking space. Please wear your ID cards at all times. You must also use this card to swipe in at the Dining Hall.
