Criminal Justice Department Career Guide

  • Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI)

    Salary

    • $50,000 to $100,000.

    General Requirements

    • Three years work experience or law or accounting degrees
    • Fluency in foreign language.
    • Being 20 years to 37 years old.
    • College degree required.
    • Basic physical fitness requirements.
    • Drug test.
    • Background check.

    Training

    • 16 week on-site training at Marine Corps Base in Quantico, VA.

  • Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA)

    Salary

    • $40,000 to $50,000.

    General Requirements

    • College graduate with minimum 2.95 GPA.
    • One year of investigations work experience or at least one year of graduate school.
    • Being 20 years to 37 years old.
    • Basic physical fitness requirements.
    • Drug test.
    • Background check.

    Training

    • 14 weeks on-site training at FBI academy in Virginia.

  • New York State Police

    Salary Estimates

    • $50,374 - Starting salary (during Academy training)
    • $61,525 - Upon graduation from the Academy
    • $65,358 - After one year
    • $77,218 - After five years
    • Additional benefits.

    General Requirements

    • Between ages 20 and 30.
    • Physical fitness, height and weight restrictions.
    • GED/High school diploma.
    • 60 hours of college credit.
    • New York State resident and have valid Driver’s License.
    • No color blindness.

    Training

    • Twenty-six week training at State Police Academy.

  • New York State Probation

    Salary Estimates

    • Generally, between $30,000 and $50,000.
    • Average of $40,000.

    General Requirements

    • Civil Service Exam
    • Graduate Degree in any number of Social Sciences or
    • Bachelor’s Degree and two years of relevant work experience.
    • At least 21 years old (usually younger than 37)

    Training

    • Two week classroom training during first six months.
    • Training as a “peace officer.”
    • They provide and encourage additional specialized training.

    Salary

    • Generally, between $25,000 and $45,000 (depending on experience, and seniority).
    • Overtime can add to salary.
    • Average of $35,000.

    General Requirements

    • At least 18 or 21 years old (depending on jurisdiction).
    • No felony convictions.
    • High School diploma.
    • Two years of work experience (preferred).
    • College degree will help with promotions.

  • County Sheriff Officer

    Salary

    • $35,000 to $70,000 (varying widely by seniority and overtime)

    General Requirements

    • At least 20 years old.
    • Exam must be taken.
    • Formal interviews.
    • Basic physical fitness requirements.
    • Drug test.
    • Background check.

    Training

    • 22 weeks of basic police training
    • 12 weeks of additional field training.
    • 18 month probationary period
