Mr Casey van Harssel, MS (2005)
- Rochester, NY
- Master of Science in Education
- Assistant Principal at Webster Schroeder High School
After graduating with a Biology major and a Chemistry minor in 2004, I remained at Niagara to earn my Master's Degree in secondary education. To start our teaching careers, my wife MacKenzie Murray-van Harssel (NU Class of 2004) and I relocated to Loudoun County, Virginia after learning of this district via information from the NU career center. I taught both Biology and Chemistry for four years to students in grades 9-12. During these four year, I completed my post graduate studies at Shenandoah University where I earned my Graduate Certificate in Administration. In 2009, I became a High School Assistant Principal at a different school in Loudoun County. I am now in my third year as an Assistant Principal at Webster Schroeder High School near Rochester, NY where I oversee the Math, Science and Technology departments in a school of over 1500 students. My years at Niagara have shaped my career in education and will guide me as I continue that career. The strong science content of my undergraduate experience set the foundation while the graduate classes in education introduced me to the teaching philosophies that guide my daily decision making and interactions with colleagues and students. The approach of collaborative learning, which was centerpiece at Niagara, allowed my students the opportunity to be active learners in the classroom. There is not a day that goes by in school where I am not applying or referencing techniques and pedagogy I learned while at Niagara University.
