Raymond Potter

Senior, Class of 2011

Summer hit and all I could think about was that I was free from school and all its endeavors but I remembered the commitment I had agreed upon to become a part of the NUOP family. That commitment was to attend a six week summer session to get me prepared for the road to come and also to enhance my skills on the college level. Coming from New York City, I definitely didn’t want to spend my summer in Niagara Falls but the six week program left me with no regrets and gave me a leg up on other incoming freshmen in terms of what to expect in the classroom and where to go for help. I also met a ton of friends within this family that I can definitely say will be a part of me for life forever. Ms. Mathews, Mrs. Rivera, and Ms. Makey have done their best in giving me the proper advice to succeed and left it up to me to implement those lessons into my classes.

I’m not going to lie and say it was an easy road for me and everything was happily ever after. I’ve definitely have had my struggles along the way. My freshmen year didn’t go as smoothly as I thought it would and that was a wakeup call for me. I wasn’t going to let an opportunity such as the NUOP program slip through my grasp. No financial restraints and countless help was offered to get me back on track but at the end of the day, it was up to me to accept it and work to my fullest potential. I would not disappoint the staff.  I recorded 3.0 semester GPAs in my next three semesters leading up to my senior year where I am right now. The NUOP staff also helped me through my transition of switching majors and kept me up to speed with the classes I needed to take in order to graduate; they are definitely one of a kind. I accepted the challenge of getting better each day and today I stand here as a senior with broadened horizons. Now I am in the position to mentor those who were once in my position with wide eyes and endless opportunity. I am thankful to give back whatever I can because if someone didn’t do it for me where would I be? Thank you NUOP for everything!
