Derek is an Associate Director at the Irish Classical Theatre Co. and a member of the Road Less Traveled Theatre Ensemble. At ICTC he has directed on average two productions a year for the past decade. Recent credits include: Joyicity a one man show on the life and work of James Joyce; Brian Friel’s Dancing at Lughnasa; Edward Albee’s A Delicate Balance; a musical adaptation of Joyce’s short story The Dead and Synge’s The Playboy of the Western World. At RLTP he directed The Clean House by Sarah Ruhl and the world premiere of local playwright Daryl Schneider’s Clean Break. For Shakespeare in Delaware Park he directed All’s Well That Ends Well; The Tempest; and King Lear. He was honored with an ARTIE career achievement award in 2003. As an undergraduate in London, he founded the Phoenix Festival Company, specifically to take new plays and classical adaptations to the fringe of the Edinburgh International Festival. It was this company’s prize-winning production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream that brought him to the U.S. and earned him a directing scholarship at Penn State University. In August 2009 he taught a directing course as part of the Drama League of Ireland's summer program at the University of Limerick. He has extensive regional acting and directing credits. He has held academic appointments at Middlesex University, London, England; SUNY at Buffalo; MIT and Bennington College
