Dr. Timothy M. Osberg

Biography

Dr. Timothy M. Osberg joined the faculty of Niagara in September of 1982. He teaches courses in introductory psychology, abnormal psychology, clinical psychology, and psychological assessment in addition to supervising the department’s practicum and co-op programs. His research interests include psychological assessment (with a focus on evaluating recent revisions of the MMPI-2), the role of mental health in college student retention, cognitive factors underpinning college student drinking, and the role of irrational food beliefs in weight loss and maintenance. He enjoys involving students in research conducted in his clinical psychology lab.

Current Research

Dr. Osberg’s research interests focus on psychological assessment, college student mental health, college student drinking, and eating disorders. He conducts research on the validity of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory in diverse populations such as prison inmates and young adults. His most recent publications and presentations involved the development of new psychological tests, including the Irrational Food Beliefs Test and the College Life Alcohol Salience Scale. With the help of a team of students, he recently conducted an alcohol intervention with the incoming freshman class and performed an evaluation of its effectiveness. Dr. Osberg’s research interests tend to evolve, depending upon the directions the interests of his students take.

Current Involvement

Dr. Osberg is fellow of the American Psychological Association and has served on the editorial boards of the Journal of Clinical Psychology, Journal of Correctional Education, Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, and Teaching of Psychology. He has been interviewed on psychological topics more than 75 times in newspaper, radio, and television outlets. He has been a practicing clinician in the Niagara Falls area for 30 years. Dr. Osberg’s community service activities center on his work with the Mental Health Association in Niagara County. He appears regularly on its monthly cable television program, conducts mental health screenings for members of the community, has been a program committee member and participant in several of its annual conferences, and helps coordinate the annual Stomp Out Stigma run which benefits the Association. Dr. Osberg was the recipient of the Community Service Award given by the MHA in 2000 and its Professionalism in Mental Health Award in 2004.
