Biography
Dr. Chang Huh, CHE, CHIA is a professor in the College of Hospitality and Tourism Management at Niagara University. He teaches courses in Hotel and Restaurant Marketing, Strategy, Analytical Methods, and Global Marketing for Hospitality and Tourism. His philosophy of teaching is “practical knowledge and skills for life,” which means that in all of his courses, he connects subjects to his life experiences and real-world situations so that his students can easily apply their learning to their own life situations.
Dr. Huh obtained a Certified Hospitality Educator (CHE) and a Certification in Hotel Industry Analytics (CHIA) to improve his quality of teaching and demonstrate his lifelong learning philosophy. His research focuses on hospitality and tourism marketing, leisure behavior, and research methodology. His research has been published in peer-reviewed journals such as Cornell Hospitality Quarterly, International Journal of Hospitality Management, Journal of Travel Research, Journal of Hospitality Marketing & Management, Tourism and Hospitality Research, Journal of Tourism and Leisure Research, Florida International University Hospitality and Tourism Review, Journal of Hospitality and Tourism, Journal of Rehabilitation, Asia Pacific Journal of Tourism Research, Journal of Tourism Sciences Society, and Journal of Hospitality & Tourism Education. He is serving on the editorial review board of Journal of Travel Research and the Ad-hoc editorial review board of Tourism Management, Journal of Travel & Tourism Marketing, and Journal of Quality Assurance in Hospitality & Tourism. He is also an active member of the International Council on Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Education, American Marketing Association, Travel and Tourism Research Association, and International Society of Travel and Tourism Educator.
Before joining the College of Hospitality and Tourism Management, Dr. Huh was an assistant professor in the Department of Parks, Recreation and Hospitality Administration at Arkansas Tech University in Russellville, where he taught several undergraduate courses and a graduate course in hospitality and tourism marketing and research methods. One interning student who took his hospitality marketing class wrote to the head of the department that “……I have been here only a week but can already relate things that I am doing with class I have taken in hospitality. Dr. Huh’s marketing class has come as a great help. At the time, I couldn’t begin to understand why he felt we need instructions with the many different Microsoft programs but, truthfully, I have already started using information he gave us in class to fulfill different projects.” He served as a vice president of Southeast Chapter of Travel and Tourism Research Association, and volunteered as a consultant on several Russellville community projects.
Dr. Huh earned his Ph.D. in Parks, Recreation and Tourism Resources at Michigan State University, focusing on hospitality and tourism marketing and research methods and completed a minor in communication. While working on his Ph.D., he was a research specialist for the Michigan Travel, Tourism and Recreation Resource Center. He participated in many regional and national marketing studies. One of his most distinguished studies was “Longitudinal Midwestern Household Travel Market Telephone Survey,” conducted from 1996 to 2003. He designed and administered this eight-year longitudinal telephone survey of households in the Midwest to evaluate the Michigan Travel Bureau’s advertising campaigns and to measure the characteristics and behavior of tourists in the states of Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin and the Canadian province of Ontario. Before entering the Ph.D. program, he acquired a range of hospitality and tourism work experiences as a marketing and sales manager, housekeeper, tour conductor and restaurant manager. He earned an M.S in Hotel Management from Sejong University and a B.S. in Hotel and Restaurant Management from Kyonggi University, South Korea.
Dr. Huh is a world traveler, having been to more than 50 countries. Between 1989 and 1991, he traveled around the world. One of his strongest convictions is that travel makes people well-rounded because it forces people to leave their safe zones and begin to understand all walks of life. He would like to live in Nepal, where he believes that people can live in simplicity and spirituality. He becomes a little talkative when asked about his travel and life experiences. Please visit his office and get to know him.
