Biography
Dr. Alexander U. Bertland arrived in the Philosophy Department at Niagara University in the Fall of 2005. His research focus has been on the Neapolitan philosopher Giambattista Vico (1668-1744). In October 2022, his monograph was published by SUNY Press: Myth and Authority: Giambattista Vico’s Early Modern Critique of Aristocratic Sovereignty. He has also published on contemporary Italian philosophers Remo Bodei and Roberto Esposito.
Focus of Teaching
Dr. Alexander Bertland’s teaching focuses on early modern philosophy and 20th-century phenomenology. He also teaches on the philosophy of art and film.
Current Research
Dr. Alexander Bertland’s research continues to focus on Vico and his contemporaries in the Neapolitan Enlightenment including Gianvincenzo Gravina and Paolo Mattia Doria. He is also working on representations of class and identity in contemporary Italian cinema.
